Financial Resolution No. 5 - Excise - Mineral Oil Tax
James Browne 6 Oct 2026
carbon tax on auto fuels, means the rates of mineral oil tax will remain reduced on a VAT-inclusive basis by 30 cent per litre for auto diesel, 25 cent per litre for petrol and 5.4 cent per litre of green diesel until the last day of February … have also included the mineral oil tax carbon component increases on the three affected fuels - on 28 February a restoration of 5 cent per litre for petrol, 7 cent per litre for auto diesel and 5.4 cent per litre of green diesel; on 8 April a restoration

huge daily pressure on households. The Government did nothing to get those prices down. It could have delivered a further 10 cent per litre reduction. That is what Sinn Féin proposed. Now we know that the Government has learned nothing from the mass protests in the spring … disgracefully and shamefully continued in this budget. We know the one; it is the one that allows them away without paying one single cent of tax on their rental income. I had to laugh at the Taoiseach, Deputy Martin, earlier. I assure him that I do not generally

petrol and €2.20 for diesel, it is this Government's expressed plan to increase diesel by 32 cents and petrol by 27 cents per litre from next February. That is absolutely bonkers. The Government also intends to hike carbon taxes on petrol and diesel not once but twice … help for agricultural diesel tomorrow. The farmers who produce the food that goes on our plate will not receive 1 cent of a reduction in agricultural diesel between today and tomorrow as a result of the Government's budget. The truckers and lorry men who deliver food across

today demand a further reduction. We are telling the Government to reduce the cost of petrol and diesel by a further 10 cent per litre at the pumps. The budget needed to put workers and families first. It needed to deal with the here and now. It needed … fact, the majority of workers do not pay the higher rate of income tax and will not get a single cent extra as a result of these income tax band changes. The budget does not even give those workers a chance to get by, never mind get ahead

that a lot of people can only afford 200 litres. When you are buying 200 litres, you will probably pay 15 cent more per litre because the lorry that goes out has to be covered. That is a fact. Lorries do not travel around for nothing. Those people … basically struggling will end up paying maybe €1.75 or €1.80 per litre because the lorry has to be covered, and they can only afford 200 litres. If you can buy 1,000 litres, you will buy it for a bit less but with the price
Financial Resolution No. 8: General (Resumed)
Ruairí Ó Murchú 8 Oct 2026
What are we talking about? We are talking about big developers getting hundreds of millions in tax breaks again while not paying one cent in tax on their rental income. We are talking about the vultures. It is hard to believe. The Government could have followed Sinn Féin … what we need to do. We would cut fuel costs by scrapping all planned carbon tax increases and delivering a further 10 cent reduction per litre at the pumps for petrol and diesel. We would cut student fees by half and abolish them entirely by September next year

else, their machines are guzzling green diesel. Its price was a constant 94 cent a litre in the year from 2025 up to the end of January 2026. Today, it is €1.76 a litre. That is what it is costing. I welcome the €15 million for rural pubs … people with disabilities. It is excellent and I know it will mean something that will be a good help. The increase of €5 per week in the fuel allowance is not much at all for people. You would hardly get 3 litres of diesel for it. I welcome

these prices skyrocketed. He refused to do this time and time again. If he did, it would deliver up to €200 per house at this point in time. He dismissed that proposal time and time again because he said it was the carbon tax. Instead, we got months … Government refused to understand and refused to listen to the pressure ordinary people were under. Many forecourts are now charging €2.20 for a litre of diesel, yet the Minister for Finance is expecting a pat on the back for not putting up the prices any further and telling
Finance (No. 2) Bill 2026: Second Stage
Pearse Doherty 20 Oct 2026
Government gave most workers scraps. Most workers got a tax cut that is worth about €4 per week. Think about that: €4 per week in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis. I have said that the budget could be summed up in five words: "Gone before … income they charge when they rip off young and old renters across this city and elsewhere by charging astronomical rents. Not a single cent of tax are they being asked to pay on this rent despite the Department of Finance saying that loophole could be closed. The renters
