97. Deputy Seán Kyne asked the Minister for Education and Youth for an update on the proposed new school building for a school (details supplied); the current status and timeline for the project; and the extent to which the proposed relocation of the school to Dangan would facilitate the release of the existing Nun’s Island campus for the future expansion of University of Galway. [74719/26]
I seek an update on the progress of the school building project at St. Joseph's Patrician College, better known as the Bish, in Galway city and when it will move to the next stage.
I hope that the Bish can progress to the 2027 tranche of schools to go to construction. It is imperative. It is planned for a 1,000-pupil school. The redevelopment will be on a site at Dangan. The school has planning permission. It is very important in terms of catchment in Galway city where there are pressures on capacity. It is important that we progress the Bish school project. They were very disappointed that it …
The integrated design team for a 300-bed block project for University Hospital Galway was appointed and approved last May. Ward blocks A and B, each comprising of 150 beds, are the first two phases of the capital programme for University Hospital Galway, which will be followed by a cancer centre, new laboratories, a permanent helipad and a new emergency department. What engagement has the Minister had with the HSE, t…
The Minister and Minister of State are welcome. I agree with a lot of what has been said on all sides. The United Nations needs reform. If we were establishing the United Nations today, I do not think anyone would construct it in a way that there would be five countries with a veto, although one may argue that some of those countries would not join a body like the United Nations if they did not have such a veto. It i…
I welcome the Minister of State and congratulate the Minister, Simon Harris, on his first budget presentation to the House. Last year, we emphasised that we were taking care of and trying to support businesses, and rightly so. A permanent change took place. There was a debate here on the reduction in VAT for hospitality and other areas.
This year, the emphasis is clearly on trying to help workers and families by giv…
92. Deputy Seán Kyne asked the Minister for Health the basis for the current recruitment restrictions affecting newly qualified midwives who have recently completed their training and are now registered to practice; the number of vacant midwifery posts in University Hospital Galway; and the measures being taken to fill these vacancies to recruit newly qualified midwives into the public health service. [72271/26]
I am inquiring about the number of vacant midwifery posts in University Hospital Galway. Recently recruited staff who have completed their qualifications are seeking positions and have been told there are no posts available. This is an important issue for the safety of patients in University Hospital Galway.
I thank the Minister for the response. The midwives who have graduated are advised that there are 23 vacancies in the region. The Minister says there are seven. There may be different classifications for full midwifery posts or others. That is what I have been informed. I welcome that of 19 newly qualified graduates, seven have been offered posts and six have accepted, but a large number of graduates still have no po…
I thank the Minister for the response. I will give a sense of the words of some of the nurses themselves. They say the whole situation is so disheartening. They said that after being offered a full-time, permanent contract last week on St. Joseph's Ward, they were meant to have orientation on Monday, 5 October, and start the post on Monday, 12 October. On Tuesday, they got an email from HR to say the posts were being…
I would like to raise the issue of public transport capacity and connectivity in the growing community surrounding Galway city, particularly in my community of Moycullen, and the 419 bus route to Oughterard and Clifden. Constituents continue to report overcrowding, limited capacity, full buses and difficulties accessing reliable public transport services despite sustained population growth in the area. Previous commu…
Residents of Carragh Hill and Carragh Drive estates in Knocknacarra in Galway city have raised significant concerns regarding the construction of an 18 m telecommunications mast by Vantage Towers under a section 254 licence by Galway City Council. Construction commenced despite ongoing efforts by the community to challenge the licence and seek further information regarding the approval process. Residents state that m…
I thank the Ceann Comhairle's office for choosing this Topical Issue. It is a matter close to my heart. It is my local school and my former primary school that I attended until 1987, and I thank the Minister for attending here this morning in person.
I acknowledge that Scoil Mhuire was one of 105 schools on the list of priority school buildings for the years 2026-27 as part of the €1.6 billion investment for this in…
I thank the Minister for the response and for the excellent news that this project will go to tender in the coming weeks. I take it, therefore, that the Minister has engaged with the Minister, Deputy Jack Chambers, and that this project has been or is ready to be sanctioned by the Department of public expenditure. I acknowledge the progress with other schools as well. We were out yesterday at Coláiste Cholmcille in I…
I wish to raise the future of Galway Port with the Minister this morning. I believe he has an important role to play, as Minister for Public expenditure and due to his previous role as Minister of State at the Department of Transport who had responsibility for ports and who visited and engaged with Galway Port CEOs, the harbourmaster and the chairs of the Galway Port company over the years.
Under the national ports …
I thank the Minister for his response. He spoke about renewable energy. The Port of Galway presently handles about 20% of Ireland's onshore wind development components. Unfortunately, the Port of Galway has been judged by its existing tonnage capability rather than what it can achieve and will achieve in its new port extension. It was a different world and a different era back in 2013. Many people, including members …
While solar energy has an important role to play in achieving Ireland's renewable energy targets, there is growing concern across Galway about the scale and location of proposed solar farm developments. Many constituents have raised concerns about solar proposals, including the projects being pursued on productive, top-tier agricultural farmland and in close proximity to rural homes and communities. The closest panel…
90. Deputy Seán Kyne asked the Minister for Health to provide an update on the progression of the master plan for the redevelopment of University Hospital Galway; the timelines for the first phase; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [52389/26]
In University Hospital Galway over recent years we have seen investment in a 75-bed en suite ward, a temporary emergency department and the new radiation oncology building, but so much more is needed. The master plan, including the 300-bed ward blocks, the oncology centre, new laboratories and a new emergency department, is hugely important to the future. I am looking for a timeline for progression of this project.
I thank the Minister for that response. Certainly, the appointment of the design team is hugely welcome and a positive step. She will be aware of the Mater Hospital during the Covid pandemic and the 98-bed block that was built in two years. These things can be done where there is urgency. We have lost a lot of time in Galway, through no fault of the Minister's, because we have debated for too long whether we will red…
Yes, there will be public engagement later today and again tomorrow. Residents in the Shantalla area hope to be able to pop in there tomorrow as well, and councillors will be engaging. I will certainly pass on the Minister's strong view on pushing on with a decision on the transfer of land in relation to the helipad project.
Block A and block B comprise 150 beds and the bed shortage is critical to this project. Ther…
I thank the Ceann Comhairle's office for selecting this Topical Issue for debate this morning, and I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Dooley, to the Chamber. As he knows, I raised this matter in the Upper House on 18 March, and due to its importance for coastal communities, I wanted it to be the first issue that I raised as part of a debate in this House.
This is, as the Minister of State knows, a classic big g…
I thank the Minister of State for his comprehensive response. I welcome the fact that he expects the MPPS to be brought to the Government in the coming weeks. May I assume, therefore, that MARA is not granting licences pending the MPPS? Is that in abeyance? Is there a formal process? Is it involving itself in consultation on the best way forward in relation to the harvesting of seaweed and the licensing thereof? It i…
7. Deputy Seán Kyne asked the Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment to provide an update on the work of the national energy affordability task force; when the action plan will be produced; the way in which timelines on implementation will be managed so as to assist households and business in advance of winter 2026; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [44562/26]
I am seeking an update on the work of the national energy affordability task force; when the action plan will be produced; the implementation timelines; and what will be done to assist households and businesses in advance of the coming winter.
